A delegation of 15 people made its way to the HamMUN 2023 last year!
Together, we all took the train at 4am in the morning, so we could visit the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. Our partner societies, MUNTUM and GÖMUN, came with us. Therefore, we did not only learn about the ITLOS itself but also had the opportunity to bond with and get to know our partner societies. The fact that the tour guide said we were her favourite group of the whole year and it was December made us all very proud.
Afterwards, we all hurried to get to our hostels before the opening ceremony and to change out of our lounge clothes from the train and into our suits, so we could make our way to the opening ceremony on the Hamburg University campus.
In the next couple of days, we had an absolutely amazing time together. Our 15 people were split in different committees from beginners to experts, from the UNEP to the HSC and our current president, Lan-Anh Vu, chaired the ITLOS committee.
We all slept together in a hostel room during our stay and we made our way to the university for breakfast every morning. Following hours of debating and discussions in our committees, we all met in the evening to have dinner together. Following a quick change of clothes at the hostel, we got to the socials. And they were awesome! With our new friends from our partners and the delegates we met in the committees, we danced hours at every social. On Saturday night, the last night, we had the delegates ball. The time spent getting ready together at the hostel was almost better than the ball itself. The sense of friendship and community was so strong and everyone was hyping everyone up about how good they were looking in their ball gowns!
However, the academic part of the HamMUN 2023 did not come short at all. Three of our delegates won awards in their committees during the closing ceremony on Sunday: Jonas Glombik and Lilia Wildemann for best position paper and Elisa Bernardi for best delegate. The HamMUN 2023 was the first conference for all of them and the applause from their fellow delegates during the award ceremony was amazing!
During our trip to the HamMUN 2023, we deepened our MUN knowledge and skills incredibly but also made friends from around the world. Most importantly, we also made new friends from Heidelberg from different fields of study which are now our friends outside of MUN as well. This trip was what MUN and the student life is all about and we would love to come back in 2024!
