The visit and speech from the Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia

We were deeply honoured to welcome H. E. Dr. Ana Polak Petrič, the Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia to HDMUN 2025!

As part of our United Nations Security Council simulation, the Ambassador held a keynote address, offering invaluable insights into Slovenia’s role and perspective within the UN framework.

Slovenia in the UN Security Council: Upholding International Legal Order and Obligations

“Slovenia is for the second time a non-permanent member of the UN SC (2024–2025). Its priorities of work are: Conflict prevention, Protecting of Population in Armed Conflicts, Women, Peace and Security, as well as Climate, Peace and Security. However, the geopolitical landscape and challenges in international relations are effecting the work of the UN SC, which has recently failed to adequately respond to any major conflict and global crisis. The erosion of international order, as it was set up after WWII, with the main aim to prevent another devastating World conflict, is happening in front of our eyes.
But as the history teaches us that out of the greatest tragedies of mankind the most noble ideas of human protection were born, we should remain optimistic. We should not surrender to the nationalisms, populisms and isolationism. Mankind needed centuries to build an international order, where the use of force and aggression are forbidden, where human rights are recognized to every human being and where solidarity among nations is a key to global peace and stability. We must succeed, despite the current skepticism, to reassess the belief that dialogue, trust and cooperation are the only possible way to regulate interstate relations. And the only possible way for the future of mankind, which is based on the respect for human dignity and humanity.”

This was a unique opportunity for our delegates to hear directly from a sitting diplomat, reflecting on the pressing global challenges and the future of multilateral cooperation.

We deeply thank H. E. Dr. Ana Polak Petrič for their amazing speech on this highly important topic and sharing with us the positions and strategies of smaller countries – like the Republic of Slovenia – in the greater fields of global politics and diplomacy!
